Two decades after its triumphant off-Broadway premiere, The Kingfish is back, with a Saturday, Aug. 27 production. The one-man play, written by Larry L. King and Ben Z. Grant, depicts the life and times of famed Louisiana Gov. Huey P. Long at the location he called home in New Orleans – The Roosevelt Hotel.

Doors open at 8 p.m. for the performance, which begins at 8:30 p.m. in the world-famous Blue Room. Featuring actor John “Spud” McConnell, the performance will celebrate what would have been Long’s 118th birthday.

Admission costs $60 per person. For reservations, call The Roosevelt at (504) 335-3138. A special pre-theatre menu will also be available in the Sazerac Restaurant.

Join The Roosevelt New Orleans Hotel for Seersucker & Fizz Friday, Aug. 26 beginning at 1 p.m. The free and open to the public event will celebrate the birth of the “Kingfish” with two of his favorite things: Ramos Gin Fizz cocktails and seersucker.

The celebration will include a variety of specially flavored Ramos Gin Fizz cocktails priced at just $8.30 (normally $13), in honor of his birthday August 30 or 8/30. A special three-course menu also will be available inside the Sazerac Restaurant, beginning at 1 p.m., along with complimentary chair massages by the Guerlain Spa at The Roosevelt.

Rumor has it that Long flew a bartender from the Sazerac Bar to New York to teach other bartenders how to make the cocktail to his liking. Long was born on Aug. 30, 1893, so this would have been the 118th birthday of the flamboyant former governor, who influenced presidential politics of pre-World War II America.

Guests are encouraged to dress in seersucker. Complimentary valet parking is available for those who dine at the Sazerac Restaurant. For lunch reservations, call (504) 648-5486.
